Hello. Found this link as I was reading up on the Nuclear Deal. Your analysis provided the pro-nuclear viewpoint, which is what I was looking for.

I will admit my ignorance regarding the deal. All I know is what I have read so far. From that I gather there are three different blocks, the third being made up of scientists and activists who contend that nuclear power is a wrong energy choice for the following reasons-

1)It is extremely unsafe, and growing redundant globally. France and Japan are quietly and gradually shutting down its nuclear power plants.

2)Nuclear power has never satisfied its supposed potential as touted by scientists. Dr. Bhabha predicted by 1987 India would generate 20,000 MW of energy through atomic power.

Prof. Ramanna later brought target down to 10,000MW by 2000.

Currently, not only a tenth of that has materialised.

3) The power generated will be insufficient-only 9% of its domestic needs.

In contrast, the energy production potential of Wind (45,000MW0, Small hydroelectric projects(15,000MW) etc can meet much more of our needs. We only use 1.5% of such non-conventional energy in India.

4) Nuclear energy is not green, contrary to Govt. claim. Its waste products stay toxic for hundreds of thousands of years (note: comparison being made with renewable energy here, and not coal, which is an undoubted polluter)

5)The safegaurds at nuclear plants that are there on paper are not actually there in practice, as has been revealed in examinations. Besides, the UCIL refuses to acknowledge health hazards at Uranium mining sites.

What would be your reaction to this? This block is for complete and global Nuclear Disarmament.

Also, you mention the US entered Iraq on ideological grounds. I can't agree with you there...it was the oil, wouldn't you say so? :)
